Camp at the Met Gala

Camp

Camp is the the theme for this year’s Met Gala, the fundraising fest for the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York City, held yesterday May 6th. As we all know the Met Gala is one of the most important red-carpet events of the year. It’s also the place were celebs take fashion the most serious, because the party is hosted by Anna Wintour. This evening is also the opening night for the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition: “Camp: Notes on Fashion” (opens on May 9, 2019 but more on that later on this blog)
What is Camp?

“Camp is an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value.”

More is More

Above a quote from Wikipedia, we, at Mimi Berlin, like to make it easy on ourselves, but we will give an example which we came up with. Joan Collins, she is the embodiment of Camp. For those who don’t know her; she is an actress born in 1933(!), who became the Queen of Camp playing Alexis Carringon in the 80s soap-opera Dynasty.

We picked our favorite outfits or most suitably camp from eonline.com. They are (Getty) images (for the Met Museum/Vogue)

Comfort Zones

Joan Collins’ outfit is also the best example of (Old-School) Camp. Wearing an age-apropriate glittery Tiara ànd a big ruffled romantic (wedding) dress with feathers is camp. What sets Ms Collins apart, is her awareness of the fact that she’s perceived as camp and she’s having fun with it on a high level. We are not sure if Nickie Minaj knows that she’s (New-School) camp, but that actually really doesn’t matter, she probably does and she is. That makes her one of the best-dressed women of this gala, according to us at Mimi Berlin. Donatella Versace is old enough to know that she doesn’t need to dress far away from her own taste. She added ‘Divine‘ to her outfit, a witty hommage to the late and famous Drag Queen we suppose. Naomi and Lizzo look very comfortable in their outfits, which are very lovely detailed and Campy indeed.

Fashionable Drag

Model Doutzen Kroes, actresses Elizabeth Debicki and Hailee Steinfeld were glad that bows and ruffles are all the rage right now. Their outfits are very fashionable and come with the “camp-part” for free, but they don’t look really at ease, don’t you think? But these dresses look very pretty on them! Well, they are beautiful dresses and women!

Costume Party

The major part of the celebs on the pink carpet were far too dressed up. We aren’t going to upload images ’cause they aren’t favorites of us. Look them up online if you haven’t seen them yet. We guess RuPaul just needs to be noticed, so he put on a clowns suit. Kendall Jenner dressed as a showgirl, which is more drag and not camp at all, in our opinion. We like the fact that Gwen Stefani is channeling Liberace, but she too looked far to “dressed up”. We didn’t get the campiness of Cardi B’s outfit at all, can somebody please explain? Well our list goes on, but we won’t bother you with that.

Below a two and a half our video by Now This News on YouTube, it’s a live stream of the Met Gala 2019 Red Carpet Arrivals. We haven’t seen it yet, but maybe you have the stamina to watch it?!

Let's make some conversation! xoxo Mimi Berlin
