Dr. Schlumbohm’s Chemex Brewer
“The CHEMEX® coffeemaker was invented in 1941 by Dr. Peter Schlumbohm, a German chemist who immigrated to New York in 1936.
When designing the CHEMEX®, Schlumbohm desired to not only make brewing the perfect cup simple, but also to have the vessel be a thing of beauty. Being a chemist, he studied and understood clearly the chemistry behind the extraction of flavor and caffeine from coffee beans.” (images via/read more chemexcoffeemaker.com) The Chemex Coffee Brewer is still available. In the fourties of the previous century the Chemex brewer was marketed as a scientific way of making coffee; as a ‘clean-cut space like’ invention. Nowadays the Chemex is marketed in a totally different way; It’s seen as eco-friendly and has a large fanbase amongst Hipsters. The invention has inspired others to create new accesoiries for the Chemex. CoffeeSock®, for instance, offers filters made of organically grown, untreated cotton. The makers came about the concept by necessity. “We are obsessive coffee drinkers and one morning in the summer of 2011 we found that we had used our last Chemex® filter. Recalling that an old hand held “coffee sock” brought home from travels in Costa Rica, was somewhere in the kitchen treasures drawer, we searched, found, and brewed with that. As we enjoyed that superior cup of coffee we were transported back to the cold, misty, early mornings huddled over our steaming cups of rich “sock-brewed”, Monteverde grown, day cracking joy. Could a cotton filter possibly work with our Chemex®? Would it brew with the same character of flavor as our traveling “coffee sock”? Well….it did!…and more.”
After much research and development, material changes, and scientific testing, we had a cloth Chemex® style filter that is reusable, higher quality, and less expensive than current market alternatives. We went on to research and create cotton filters for most popular brewing systems. All of our filter designs have been tested to ensure that they perform as well, or better, than commonly available alternatives, while remaining less costly, and less wasteful.
