Dutch Design Week 2017 at the VDMA Garage

Mimi Blogger Team visited the VDMA Garage during the Dutch Designweek in Eindhoven. DDW can be visited until October 29th, 2017. The VDMA building can be roughly divided into 2 parts; left and right. This post is about the work exhibited on the right end of the venue.

In the world of Dutch Design there is this complex way of presenting. Almost every designer works with more than one collective, organisation, experiment, project, brand, manufacturer, sponsor, curator and god knows what else, besides having their own toko, (that means shop in Bahasa) which is almost always named after themselves, adding the word ‘studio’ either in front or after the designer’s given name.

If you’re not familiar with these kind of systems and, even more important; if you don’t know all the names by heart, you are often not quite sure what you’re watching. Seeing the same designers scattered allover the DDW can be confusing as well. We, at Mimi Berlin Blogger Team, don’t like that, so we did some research and came up with the following ‘main events’ situated at the VDMA building.

On Show at the VDMA building

Envisions, a Dutch collective directed by Sanne Schuurman and Simone Post. Envisions teamed up with Finsa, a Spanish wood manufacturer (chipboard, veneer etc.). On show is the experimental collaboration between a group of designers, chosen by Envisions and Finsa (“the wood industry”). Here, you don’t get to see a finished product, only experiments; mostly executed in friendly and trendy hard-pastel colors. Envisions also organises 5 lunch moments during the DDW. From what we understand; “‘Creative Chef‘ Jasper Udink ten Cate prepares lunch with ‘Finsa‘ and the experiments by the Envisions group in mind.”

Transnatural is a Dutch art and design label. At DDW they present the Robotanica Exhibition; “a series exploring a new wilderness of technological species with artists, designers and scientists. It shows how robotics already plays a role or will manifest itself within our changing ecology.”

Woes van Haaften and Roosje van Domselaar are the curators of 2 presentations; 1- Post Modern Collector’s items of mostly unique works made exclusively for Post Modern in the size of a postcard: produced, sometimes numbered and signed by artists and designers. 2- In Stijl, the exhibition; see and read about that HERE

Sunbrella fabrics is going solo; altough Parasol ‘Leaf’ by vanWagenberg/deGreef is upholstered with Sunbrella fabrics, and they both also show at the Kazerne.

WOTH Magazine: has launched its newest issue; number 7, the design magazine is also for sale exclusively at the Dutch Design Week. WOTH is presented on furniture designed by Lex Pott for Functionals.

The ‘spatial laboratory’ Loop-pH is showing (we think solo) the fabulous OSMO installation.

Crossover Collective, is actually one person; designer Floor Nijdeken. He created the project ‘Perky Panels‘ (click the link above for info about that.)
