Mimi Berlin visited the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Graduation Fashion Show 2014 the other day. The show was held in an abandoned office building on the outskirts of Amsterdam, a stunning venue! Eleven graduates showed their final collections after the first and second year students showed theirs. At the Gerrit Rietveld Academie the fashion department seems to emphasize more on concept, ideas and the individuality of the graduation students rather than teaching them to translate concepts into fashionable collections in which wearable design, researched fabrics and garments are the most important. In the folder we received at the show we see introductions to, and interviews with the students, lot’s of inspirational pictures but not really any information on the actual collections besides sometimes a little sketch. That’s a different way of approach to fashion education compared to other academies in the Netherlands. (we compare this at the moment with the fashion departments at ArtEZ and HKU because we’ve seen their graduation shows recently) In that context; our favorite at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie graduation show 2014 was the presentation by Carlynn Armour. She showed 20 outfits, all the same, in different fabrics. The concept behind this collection was “to draw attention to the wasteful ways in fashion” She only used fabrics made of recycled rest materials and also recycled two rather dated patterns as well; a blouse and pants. Seeing these duplicates was a pleasant surprise, certainly after the first six models had passed us by and we realized the silhouette wouldn’t change. We are not sure if this project really isn’t “wasteful”, it won’t be for sure if Carlynn sells (or donates) all the outfits and her customers are wearing them frequently enough. Or if she turns them into new clothes of course…..Below a video of the finale; all the eleven graduates and their designs pass by.

Mimi Berlin took some photo’s backstage photo’s after the show>>>View them HERE and also see some designs up-close.
