Dylan Westerweel Winner Lichting 2019 Fashion Contest

Dylan Westerweel

Dylan Westerweel is the winner of Lichting 2019. That’s the annual fashion contest for freshly graduated Dutch fashion design students. Westerweel graduated with honors at the ArtEZ Arnhem fashion design department. He showed his work, together with 13 other participants from schools allover The Netherlands, at De Nieuwe Kerk. The Nieuwe Kerk (tr; New Church) is a wonderful venue used as catwalk during the Amsterdam Fashion Week. Since we cover this fashion contest each year we suggest you click here to get to know more about Lichting.

Homme Fatale

Westerweels winning collection ‘Jack Saul’ is inspired by rent boys from the Victorian era. Dylan created the male counterpart for the femme fatale with his vision and design talent. By using the beauty and sexuality of the boys as a weapon and a tool, he created a well balanced collection. The images above show what that story looks like.

Jury is

Kim Bekker (Freelance Creative Direction for a.o. Isabel Marant), Eva Losada (Fashion Photographer), Jo Simpson (Curriculum leader at Fashion & Textiles department Central Saint Martins) and Rolien Zonneveld (Editor-in-chief for i-D Netherlands).

Jury says

“Over the course of fashion history, designers have reacted to, and in many cases influenced, the social and political frameworks of sexiness of their respective times. Today, with gender identities and expectations crumbling quicker than ever, the idea of what makes a man sexy has never been more fluid. Dylan’s collection was a refreshing take on what that masculine sexiness means in 2019. Inspired by the rent boys of the Victorian period, he gave us an interesting take on the idealised masculine silhouette, by crafting intricate corsets for men and combining it with soft and seductive fabrics. His use of embroidery, hand painting and 3D structures in florals and anatomical hearts showed great technical skill. His baby blue and magenta pink colour pallet, applied to soft hand dyed pink cotton and wools was original and fresh.”

Honourable mentions were given to Iris van Wees, graduate of AMFI Amsterdam Fashion Institute and Armia Yousefi, graduate of Utrecht School of the Arts.

Amsterdam Fashion Week: Lichting 2018

Lichting 2018

Yes, it’s that time of the year agian: it’s fashionweek around the world and also in Amsterdam. Before we go on about the Lichting 2018 show, you must know that it is the first Amsterdam Fashion Week (AFW) without sponsoring by Mercedes-Benz, Dutch fashion entrepreneur Danie Bles is in charge now.

Museumplein in Amsterdam

Ms Bles changed fashion week in Amsterdam in a couple of ways. She introduced the “See Now, Buy Now’ formula, aimed at the consumer market. Programmed are catwalkshows by Hudson’s Bay, Penn&Ink N.Y., Silvian Heach, Goldbergh, 10DAYS, supermarket Lidl x Heidi Klum, Maison 365, Le Cafe Noir Studio & Jenneskens and Zoe Karssen. (We are not sure how many of these shops and/or brands are from The Netherlands) the location AFW has moved from the buildings at the Westergasfabriek complex to a tent on the Museumplein in Amsterdam, which is covered with grass.

FashionWeek NL: Collectie Arnhem 2017

FashionWeek NL: Collectie Arnhem 2017

On Thursday Jan. 26 Mimi Blogger Team went to see the presentation of Collectie Arnhem 2017: Freedom! Inconvenience! Madness! And a hard-boiled egg.

The third year students of Artez Arnhem Fashion Design came up with a surprisingly divers collection and presentation. In the color of a hard boiled egg: yellow, they indeed showed freedom and inconvenience. Models obiviously felt free in ‘sweatshirt’ tops and couldn’t walk at all in monumental trousers (just naming the extremes here). The latter is sheer madness od course!

The fact that our fashion-imagination instantly started translating the more ‘inconvenient’ designs into wearable clothes isn’t ‘madness’ at all! No, au contraire; it is exactly what you need if you own a fashion label: intelligent ideas, authenticity and crafstmanship (needless to say that includes pattern making etc.) seamlessly applyable to more wearable fashion design.
We would hire a student with those abilities right away. Leider/Unfortunately/Helaas/Malheuresement we don’t own a fashion label.

Lookbook Images were photographed by the designers, as part of the annual ‘Collectie Arnhem’ study project. So for the best images made of this collection visit Collectie Arnhem’s Facebook, Instagram or site.

Each year again the ‘Collectie Arnhem’ production team manages to invite us to an unexpected place which we’ve never seen before! This year the fashion presentation was held at the newly opened NewWerktheater in Amsterdam, a build from the sixties which used to be a theater. A rather perfect location which will soon be opened for food and drinks (and more)
