Moooi at Milan Design Week 2019

Moooi, A Life Extraordinary

Moooi is presenting at a new location this year, to be exact the Mediateca Santa Teresa building, situated at the via della Moscova 28 in the Brera Design district. Also brand new are two new Moooi designs. The BFF Sofa designed by Marcel Wanders and The Party, lamps by Dutch designer-duo Kranen/Gille. The lamp is hard to be missed at the venue; it is made in ceramics in the shape of a face and comes in many, mucho varieties. The newest Moooi couch is harder to get a glimpse of, because the visitors are lounging and even sleeping on it. (FYI; We visited at the end of the day.)

According to Moooi’s PR; Luxurious, Whimsical and Original are main keywords for this presentation. We, at Mimi Berlin, think they are right.

Foam Wall Coverings

It’s the first time we noticed the interesting ‘Extinct Animals Collection‘ a collection of soft foam-like, 3D wallcoverings in different patterns (as you can see in the images we took above; in brique, in a pattern that’s named ‘Dwarf Rhino’) These walls remind us of the old-fashioned wallpaper often used in hotels and kitchens in the seventies, they cover unevenness very well. We think it’s a smart move to present it as being luxurious!

Moooi Tokyo Blue

Downstairs you can find the presentation ‘Moooi Tokyo Blue’: everything in indigo blue also furniture in a slightly Japanese setting: workshops with denim and (smelly) dyed leather are on show here as well. A collaboration with Amsterdam Jeans city, ECCO Leather and Shin-Denim and Moooi.

Balenciaga’s Spring-Summer Collection for 2018

Balenciaga’s Spring-Summer Collection for 2018

About a month ago it was fashion-week in some parts of the world. Fresh women’s wear collections for Spring/Summer 2018 were presented once again. Balenciaga showed in Paris. Below the most demure looks of the pret-a-porter show. One of our favorites because these outfits really seem to be an instant a holiday-trip to us!
Greetings from Amsterdam,
xoxo Mimi

Worth mentionable is the fact that Balenciaga asked the Crocs brand if they could produce a platform shoe. They could. Result: the ‘Foam’ shoes, lightweight-odor-free-water-resistant-fully-molded-platform-Crocs in Croslite™ material.

According to Highsnobiety blog the Balenciaga Triple S sneaker was the most spotted sneaker on the feet of the audience. (See that street-style sneaker report here at highsnobiety.com it’s fun!) We wonder if the Foam platforms will be equally popular, what do you think?

Great Inventions: Rose Facial Foam from Kanebo

Great Inventions: Rose Facial Foam from Kanebo

How fun is this foamy soap!? It comes out of the spraycan in the shape of a rose!
Makes us, at Mimi Berlin, wonder what kind of shape they would come up with for men’s shaving foam!

MBFWA Sistaaz of the Castle by Jan Hoek and Duran Lantink

MBFWA Sistaaz of the Castle by Jan Hoek and Duran Lantink

Sistaaz of the Castle, is a project by photographer Jan Hoek and fashion designer Duran Lantink, in which they explore the colourful looks of transgender sex workers that roam the streets of Cape Town, South Africa. Most of the girls are homeless, living under a bridge beside the Castle of Good Hope. The local sex workers’ organisation, S.W.E.A.T., gave Hoek and Lantink the opportunity to meet and collaborate with their transgender support group Sistaazhood. Hoek and Lantink zoom in on six girls from the community: Coco (25), Cleopatra (23) Sulaiga (30), Gabby (29) Flavinia (33) and Joan Collins (57). Duran Lantink gave shape to the girl’s ultimate fantasies; one of the girls imagined herself working in a luxurious Victorian brothel, an other girl wants to become Miss Africa; those kinds of dreams. Jan Hoek photographed the girls in this full-force-fantasyland in Cape Town.

What Hoek and Lantink found in South Africa they brought back to The Netherlands; that’s what we got to see at the fashion show; Lantink gathered all the fantasies, including his own, and created the dream-couture-capsule collection. Amongst this collection the dream-outfits made in Cape Town were also on show; presented on a tableaux vivant-like mini stage on wheels, which was pushed over the catwalk by even more models (in all shapes and sizes known to human kind) who were wearing Bonne Suits in combination with shirts with photo prints by Jan Hoek. On the backdrop screen we could see Jan Hoek’s photo’s accompanied by quotes of the South African girls of the Sistaazhood.

The work of Hoek and Lantink matches (or complete) each other very well, and so do the South African girls and their the environment, a perfect match! Mimi Blogger Team was impressed and had to take a quiet moment by themselves after the show. Well done!

This project can be seen during MBFWA into two parts;
-MBFWA; The Sistaaz of the Castle dream-couture capsule collection, which was on show at the Gashouder (January 16, 2015 in Amsterdam).
-MBFWA OFF SCHEDULE; The Sistaaz of the Castle photography exhibition at Foam Amsterdam (opens on January 13 at 17:30 and is on view until 20 January 2016.)

Sistaaz of the Castle is made possible by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, Art of Impact, MiaP Foundation, Fonds Kwadraat, Fotolab Kiekie, SWEAT, Vice Media and various donors.” (read more www.foam.org)

Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam 2014

Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam 2014

Yesterday we (Mimi Blogger Team) visited the Unseen photo fair in Amsterdam. Unseen is a small fair showcasing international gallery’s/artists. As we wandered through the booths we noticed a lot of anonymity on show. Faces hidden, cut out or otherwise undone of their identity. The hidden image (with white paint) by Cornford and Cross was the most anonymous work at the fair by far. Also on show; a lot of product photography. Everyday-products such as toys, machines, food and what have you not, were both altered (mostly stacked) or left untouched, then photographed. We took some photo’s for you all of what we noticed. Do visit the Unseen site if you’d like to see what we didn’t notice. Continue reading

Frame Store Amsterdam

The Frame Store Amsterdam at Felix & Foam in the Felix Meritis building at the Keizersgracht 324 (next to the Beren straat) opened it’s doors a month ago. It is the store of Frame Magazine in the form of a small department store which carries high-end interior and fashion design including a selection of books and art. Brands such as & Tradition, Vitra, Moooi, John Smedley Avelon and Youasme are sold at this store.  The Felix & Foam initiative is worth a visit even if you hate shopping because you can also have lunch or coffee at the Foyer restaurant or visit one of the exhibitions or just visit the stunning Felix Meritis building.

Felix &Foam is a new, temporary (April 2014-Oct 2014) initiative of Foam in collaboration with Frame and restaurant Foyer, in the imposing Felix Meritis building in Amsterdam.
