Yesterday we went to see the Award show brought to life by Dutch couturier Frans Molenaar. It was the 20th edition and it was the first time without the couturier himself being present. Mr Molenaar sadly and unexpectactly passed away in the Winter of last year, but he made sure his award-show can continue for years to come. Host and member of the jury Jhim Lamoree asked the audience to stand up and remember Frans Molenaar before the show.

The show was held at the house/studio of Mr Molenaar in Amsterdam, it was opened by Karin Vlug‘s collection, made with the prize money she won last year. Her collection has a tight, thoroughly researched (with José Theunisen) concept. This strict concept remains visible in the garments, but at the same time the concept doesn’t overrule the wearability of Karin’s couture capsule collection. Karin’s work becomes more wearable every year. (read about that concept HERE)
Participants Frans Molenaar Prize 2015; Tung Trinh, Josephine Goverts, Max Zara Sterck, Maartje Janse, Lilian Admiraal (all BA graduates’15 <click link for more info on these designers) and Sunanda Koning (MA ’15) All graduated this year at ArtEZ fashion design, Arnhem. Simeon Morris finished his fashion masters at ArtEZ in 2013. Simeon is the most experienced designer of the group his “experience includes working for a number of renowned designers, including Alexander McQueen in the late 90’s and Hussein Chalayan, amongst others.” (quoted)
After the longest deliberation ever in “Frans-Molenaar-Prize-History” the jury named Josephine Goverts the winner of the Frans Molenaar Prize 2015. She got a well deserved big fat check (see picturesabove) of €10.000. Next year, same time, at an other place, we will get to see what she accomplished with her reward! Continue reading →
Since 1996 Dutch Couturier Frans Molenaar presents an award for the best fashion designer of the year. The reason for creating this yearly event simply is that he wants to help new talent, just like he had help when he started out, so he told us. ArtEZ Fashion Design BA ’13 graduate Liselore Frowijn won the Frans Molenaar Couture Award 2013 and prize money of €10.000,- to invest in a new couture collection which she’ll present next year at the 2014 issue of this Award. We feel that was well deserved!

Out of the six contestants four graduated at ArtEZ Arnhem, we have seen those collections previously in an immense old building. Liselore’s collection was the only one with the same vibe, same message, fabulous fabric development and really perfect workmanship when presented up close in the petite and very intimate salon of the couturier. Joris Suk took the opportunity to spice his presention up, his collection was accompanied by an a-tonal singer making (live) music with a plastic lettuce dryer. We also really fancied the collection by Joshua Enker, graduated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, which was inspired by Miss Marple, WOW he developed metal, shiny fabrics, and moulded a twinset like silhouette into wonderful shapes for men and women: Miss Marple in Space…. Winner of last year, Peet Dullaert showed a small collection of women’s wear to start of the show. All together it was a joy to watch this show!!
It’s Fashion Week in The Netherlands, to be more specific it’s Amsterdam Fashion week. We visited the annual, and always fun, award shows.
Petite Défilé de la Couture, June 11, 2012:
The Frans Molenaar Prize in a nutshell: 5 students, 4 outfits each. Graduation collections picked from academies in The Netherlands. This year’s result: 4 designers educated at ArtEZ, Arnhem, 1 designer educated at The Royal Academy of the Arts, The Hague.
Winner of the award wasPeet Dullaert.
Last year’s result: Winner Magnus Dekker, also graduated at ArtEZ, Arnhem, showed his couture collection made with the FM Prize he won last year.
The défilé was held at The Master Tailor Institute in Amsterdam. Except for the outfits of Hoi Man Cheung (from The Hague) there wasn’t much new to be discovered here for us,as we already visited the fashion show in Arnhem. But as the models wearing Peet Dullaertpassed us buy in the tiny school hallway we did discover something new. This collection made music, a mesmerizing, rich sound of clicking gemstones, in a perfect rhythm. Imagine that as a soundtrack for your fashionshow! Unfortunately it was an unused, tout gratuit, bonus. Never mind that, P.D’s clothing is fun, immaculately tailored refined and fashionable. A well deserved winner of the €10.000 prize!
Lichting 2012 supported by G-Star RAW @ AFW Westergas, Amsterdam. June 12,2012:
In a nutshell: 14 fashion graduates, 5 outfits each. 7 academies, 2 students per academy: AMFI Amsterdam Fashion Institute, Artez Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten Den Haag, Hogeschool Zuyd Maastricht, Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, Willem de Kooning Academie Hogeschool Rotterdam. This year’s result: A very entertaining show, and, as always, a great overview of all the dutch graduation students and academies in a non-school setting. The award winner is Yvonne Kwok, she graduated from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. She showed a truly, lovely and happy(?) collection, filled with immaculately executed details in different fabrics. So much to be discovered in one outfit! This collection can hold itself at a show as well as up close.
Yvonne Kwok won €10.000 and will be working on G-Star’s presentation in Berlin. All photo’s from Yvonne Kwok’s collection by Peter Stigter provided by schoon den boer PR
Last Year’s results:
Winner in 2011 was Sanne Schepers (ArtEZ). Her designs are now sold at the RA concept stores in Antwerp and Paris.
Sanne Schepers won the G-Star Raw Talent Award. She made her collection completely by hand. This couture collection was awarded by a jeans-label, interesting….. (more)
The Frans Molenaar Prijs was won by Magnus Dekker. Magnus’s collection is machinemade. Mr Molenaar is a Couturier, hmm, an intricate switch? Or just a case of plain randomness? Both Sanne and Magnus graduated from Artez, Arnhem‘s fashion department. Congrats!!
Frans Molenaar is a dutch couturier, who donates €10.000 taken from his AOW (State Old Age Pensions Act), so he says. (runway photo’s by Peter Stigter)
He’s has not yet retired, but he did design a safety roller for the elderly.
