UNLOCK, BECOMING

It’s that time of the year again: Collectie Arnhem 2019 is launched. Mimi Berlin Blogger Team went to see the fashion show at Loods 6 in the capital city of The Netherlands; Amsterdam. The images made for the 21st edition of Collectie Arnhem are promising already! We placed them below, what do you think? Nice, n’est pas!
The show itself lived up to that promise for sure.

Lights, Music and Action

Tthe concrete hallway of Loods 6 was lit in lilac and 4 huge ventilators were placed in the middle. There were no chairs to be found, only black plastic square packages of, what we think was hay; for V.I.P’s to sit on. The ventilators were slowly rolled to the back of the runway and then it was time for: Lights, Music and Action. The rather graphic image of the back-lighted ventilators was maintained during the show; highlighting the silhouettes of the designs in full force black, like they should be. The (mostly) geometrical silhouettes had in common that they all were fashionably elongated (which is always a joy to the eye). To illustrate the effect it had on us, at Mimi Berlin: at one point KKK outfits, a Grobbebol and a Pierrot came to mind at the same time. Fun!

Concept and Design

As for the story behind the concept and designs we suggest you read the folder, it’s very accurate and we couldn’t desribe it better ourselves. That seems lazy, but it is not. You must know that the average texts about fashion collections are an embellished, or even nonsensical, version of what you get to see. Not in this case, it is all the truth including the opening story. All 20 students and 3 tutors (Rens de waal, Lenn Cox and Dennis van der Broeck) spent a weekend together to create the footprint for the Unlock, Becoming Collectie Arnhem. And as always, we suggest you see the designs for yourself, that’s always the best way to get in the know!

Second Chance to see this collection

No worries if you missed the fashion show because you have a second chance to see all the creations made by the third year students at the annual ArtEZ graduation fashion show this summer in June. We aren’t sure if you get to feel the same magic in another space but, hey, getting a second chance is always nice.

What is Collectie Arnhem?

Collectie Arnhem is a collective project in which third-year students of the Fashion Design bachelor at ArtEZ University of the Arts collaborate to develop, design and present a cohesive fashion collection. This project offers a laboratory-style environment where students research and explore diverse aspects of the process and the profession; questioning what fashion is and proposing what fashion can be. The project culminates in a fashion presentation to a professional audience, organized by the students themselves. Collectie Arnhem is made possible with the support of the ArtEZ University of the Arts and the Made in [Arnhem] campaign. Collectie Arnhem is initiated in 1999 by Alexander van Slobbe and Gisela Prager.

Vitra at the Salone del Mobile 2018

Vitra showcased everything they ever produced in a huge stand. Newest designs mixed with older ones in large mock-up rooms; in different styles and colorschemes: primary colors, in orange, and in a colder colorscheme with silver (introducing the limited edition Verner Panton chair in chrome.) and one in pastels. Furthermore there was an almost educational part to be seen at the salone del mobile fair: ‘classic’ designs by Charles and Ray Eames, Maarten van Severen, Jasper Morrison and Hella Jongerius, showcased in a way that you could see how they are made; a true ‘design showcase’. Also on show, in wooden cupboards as large as walls, were all the accessories produced by Vitra through the years, which was a nice interior-history lesson as well.

We, at Mimi Berlin, thought this was a very impressive and beautiful presentation.

Mimi Blogger Team visits exhibitions all the time. We often take Partysnaps but we also like to like to incorporate the art itself in our photo’s. Over the years we gathered a large collection of people watching the art on show. The moments we capture are special or absurd or just plain pretty. We also like to take these photo’s when we’re bored or when the younger audience is bored. Also if it’s too crowded to really have a look at the paintings (or other form of art) on show, which is often the case on opening nights.

Red Star Over Russia A Revolution in Visual Culture

Mimi Berlin Blogger Team went to see the Red Star Over Russia (A Revolution in Visual Culture 1905 – ’55) exhibition at the Tate Modern in London the other day. This exhibition marks the centenary of the October Revolution. On show is a visual history of Russia and the Soviet Union. From the overthrow of the last Tsar and the revolutionary uprisings of 1917, through to the struggles of the Civil War and Stalin’s campaign of terror, it reveals how political events led to the social transformation that inspired a wave of innovation in art and graphic design across the country.

David King

‘Red Star Over Russia’ is made with the huge collection of the late graphic designer David King (1943 – 2016) which carries over a quarter of a million artefacts by famous and anonymous photographers, artists and designers, it features over 250 posters, paintings, photographs, books and ephemera. King started his collection of over 250,000 items relating to this period while working for The Sunday Times Magazine in the 1970s. The collection was acquired by Tate in 2016. In the world of Dutch Design there is this complex way of presenting. Almost every designer works with more than one collective, organisation, experiment, project, brand, manufacturer, sponsor, curator and god knows what else, besides having their own toko, (that means shop in Bahasa) which is almost always named after themselves, adding the word ‘studio’ either in front or after the designer’s given name.

If you’re not familiar with these kind of systems and, even more important; if you don’t know all the names by heart, you are often not quite sure what you’re watching. Seeing the same designers scattered allover the DDW can be confusing as well. We, at Mimi Berlin Blogger Team, don’t like that, so we did some research and came up with the following ‘main events’ situated at the VDMA building. Continue reading →
