Peter Jansen’s Flat Earth Realized In Rotterdam

The Rotterdam Transit Authority (RET) has commissioned Dutch artist Peter Jansen to realize his huge artwork FLAT EARTH at the Dijkzicht Metro Station. It will be printed by the USA based Polyvision Ceramic Metals at a scale of 20 meters wide in a unique way. They developed special metal oxide inks for high resolution digital printing on steel plates. This way the 20 meters wall can be processed in an enamelling furnace into a ceramic surface. During Bicentennial Year in the USA (1976) Peter Jansen travelled for 2 months through several states buying a newspaper in the 40 cities he passed, this way summarizing and documenting the journey. Starting in New York on the 4th of July at Bicentennial Day and ending in the same town on the 13th of September unexpected but quite historic events happened, like the and the death of Mao Zedong. This book includes all at half size and is published in a limited edition of 300 signed and numbered copies. Book dimensions 12 x 12 inch. A copy of this book is on display at the Royal Library of the Netherlands in The Hague.

FLAT EARTH is a book about a work of art by Peter Jansen and published in a limited edition, signed and numbered, It’s online to browse. Make sure you do, it’s quite a trip!

“For 20 years, from 1993 to 2013, Peter Jansen wandered around the world, visiting almost half of the existing countries. During these travels he recorded this non-stop journey in what he called the ‘Vista Series’. This is a large number of panorama-like photo assemblages, made of sometimes more than 50 pictures, clearly marked by two vertical and very tiny white borderlines on each side. In 2013 he decided to summarize this nomadic period of his life. He selected 50 Vistas from 23 countries to create a huge piece of work, made up from 1050 digital prints. He called it FLAT EARTH. Because of its huge dimensions and complex structure it has not been executed as yet and up to now it has only a virtual existence.

The book unfolds FLAT EARTH in a sequential way. It follows the art work from top left to bottom right, all Vistas are linked up in 120 pages of continuous spreads. FLAT EARTH is published in a limited edition of 300 copies, signed and numbered.” (read more)
