Jump into the Future: Opening Night

Jump into the Future: Opening Night

Mimi Berlin Blogger Team visited the opening night of the exhibition Jump into the Future –  Art from the 90’s and 2000’s. The Borgmann Donation. Thomas Borgmann is an art-collector who donated (the largest donation yet) his art to the Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam. Among the featured artists are Cosima von Bonin (see images below)

The opening night wasn’t just drinks-n-nibbles-like, no; it was a true large-scaled party! An ‘Artsy-Party’ to be precise. The Stedelijk museum co-hosted, with Ultrasexy and Amsterdam Art Weekend, this party for everyone for free. the gigantic entrance hall of the Stedelijk Museum transforms into an intimate artistic rave club where nothing is what it seems (readmore artsy party) We are not sure it was an intimate affair; the place was packed, but the museum sure was turned into a rave club! Fun! For a moment we truly felt like we lived in ‘the big-city’. Thanks for donating this party Amsterdam!

Shadows at the Tinguely retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam

Shadows at the Tinguely retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam

Mimi Blogger Team visited the Jean Tinguely exhibition ‘Machinespectacle’ at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam the other day. (we did that live on instagram by the way) There is somethng about this exhibition we want to discuss with y’all: the shadows.

Yes, the shadows! We got distracted by how the works were lit: very inconsistent in our opinion. We got confused in one of the first rooms, which was filled with (earlier) works in black and white; mostly presented on the walls. Sometimes the light created shadows that were very pretty, either on the wall or on the work itself. But this ‘shadowplay’ wasn’t very consistent and thus distracting for us. And that’s no fun, walking through an exhibition trying to figure out what the idea of the lightplan is, when you should be enjoying art.

Rüpert von Rom; The Oasis of Matisse

For this month’s MUST SEE I advise all of you fabulous Mimi Berlin followers to take a trip to the oasis of Matisse. An exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam of the French artist who is known for this original draughtsmanship. An overwhelmingly colorful experience with over 100 pieces. xoxo Rüpert

We wanted to visit the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam the other day. It has been closed, due to renovation and building, for a couple of years (!) and has recently been re-opened (22/9/2012). Benthem Crouwel Architects designed the astonishing building attached to the former 19th century museum building designed by A.W. Weissman.

The museum closes at 5:00 PM we arrived at 4:45 or so. Since tickets cost €16,- we thought it best to visit another day. We could visit the shop though, it’s open for ticketless people, so we did. Here’s were this story gets interesting (for people without money). There is an, almost safe, way to visit the museum for free.

Into the shop itself, with posters on the right side. It can’t be missed, there is no other route.

You’ll find the cashier on your right hand,  just follow the desk straight on ahead.

Voila, the exit (or entrance) into the museum itself.

You can exit the store ‘subway style’ into the museum: insert your entrance ticket, so it says on the handwritten note, if somebody has done that, the doors will be open for at least 45 seconds. Here’s your chance, its an  unattended exit. (In The Netherlands the unemployment issue has been solved…NOT)

We, at Mimi Berlin are far too Chique for these kinds of actions, so we went on to see the rest of the store; more books and several other, (dutch) design goodies (Lenneke Wispelwey, Klaartje Martens, HAY etc.)

The museumshop is operated by the German publishing house and bookseller Buchhandlung Walther König. If you live in Amsterdam it’s quite a disappointing shop. Aside from the books, the design products they carry are mostly available in any other (department) store in The Netherlands. We’ll visit the museum when we wake-up earlier one day.
Keep you posted!
