Measuring Blueness with the Cyanometer

The Cyanometer: measuring color the Antique way

The Cyanometer is a magical yet simple instrument for measuring ‘blueness‘, not the feeling but specifically the colour intensity of blue sky. A Cyanometer consists of squares of paper dyed in graduated shades of blue and arranged in a color circle or square that can be held up and compared to the color of the sky. It helped lead to a successful conclusion that the blueness of the sky is a measure of transparency caused by the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere. Measuring Blueness with the Cyanometer

Ways of Knowing by Daniel Stier

Ways of Knowing by Daniel Stier

“A personal project exploring the real world of scientific research. Not the stainless steel surfaces bathed in purple light, but real people in their basements working on selfbuilt contraptions. All shot in state of the art research institutions across Europe and the US, showing experiments with human subjects. Portrayed are the people conducting the experiments – students, doctorands and professors.” (images courtesy of the artist Daniel Stier)

Alchemist Matter by Laurence Humier

At Milano Design Week 2015 we’ve met Laurence Humier, a Belgian architectural engineer. She works as a designer in Italy, providing services and products in the field of industrial design, communication services, and education. She presented and designed The Alchemist Matter, an educational tool for children from 6 to 12 years old to make their first steps in chemistry, learning with creative, hands-on activities how science can be useful. The activities require the supervision of an adult. The project has been funded on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter early 2015. Continue reading

Balance

Rope balancer D-BP with a KBK system (via)

The balancer in the photo uses magnets from a Top Flight Prop Balancer and works the same way. The shaft is a No. 54 drill blank with one end ground to a point, and the frame is made of wood.  Music wire of 0.055 in. diameter would also work as a shaft, but would not be as accurate.(via)

A CG balancer is included with the Reactor Bipe, so that you can properly set and balance your model to match your flying style. (via)
