Chanel Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016

Wow, again a great fashion spectacle by the House of Chanel; they created every girl’s dream, a lifesize dollhouse! Build in the Grand Palais in Paris with a green lawn and a blue sky……We also really loved the retro hairdo’s created by Sam McKnight.

Couture Winter 2016: Venues

Couture Winter 2016: Venues

By filtering out shows that were held on a traditional catwalk, we could divide the venues in two categories; House and Garden and Entertainment

Category; House and Garden
At Valentino they named the collection “Mirabilia Romae” which means “The Marvels of Rome” and that’s where they also took the audience: Showing outside at the flagship store at Piazza Mignanelli in Rome. (after giving a fashion-exhibition tour situated in 3  of the most stunning buildings of Rome) Also held in Rome, at the Galleria Borghese: The lavish opening event of the Azzedine Alaïa Couture/Sculpture exhibition. Dolce and Gabanna treated their guests to a  “Mid Summer’s Night” themed weekend in Portofino, they own a couple of properties there, which they used for presenting Fine Jewelry, Alta Moda, and Alta Sartoria collections. Also dinner and a party (with Kylie Minogue performing) were scheduled for this weekend. (be sure to read all about that here on vogue.com) At Christian Dior they just built a complete venue/installation/building with special light effects at the garden of the Rodin museum in Paris “The Garden of Delight”

Schiapparelli showed at the Place Vendôme salon with a make believe “Theatre d’Elsa” as backdrop. Fendi actually showed in a Théâtre (de Champs-Élysees) with a surrealist backdrop of Giorgio de Chirico’s Piazza d’Italia. RVDK presented in an empty, typical Parisian, apartment in the sixth arrondissement (that’s what starting fashion houses mostly do in Paris during the Couture Shows)

Category; Entertainment
Chanel faked a Casino, built in the Grand Palais, with actual gamblers (a.o. celebrities, actress Kirsten Stewart)as backdrop for the show. Viktor & Rolf gave a performance dressing and undressing models and then putting the dresses on the walls of he Palais de Tokyo museum. Charlie Le Mindu made use of the props at the Le Crazy Horse de Paris for his couture show.

Chanel’s Garden: Spring Couture 2015

Chanel’s Garden: Spring Couture 2015

A custom made fake garden in white! How wonderful is this Chanel runway venue at the Grand Palais in Paris? Simply astonishing, so much that we won’t elaborate on the clothes, check them out here for yourself.
“It took six months to make the 300 flowers that decorated the Chanel set today. Each of them had its own engine, and when at the show’s start (model) Baptiste Giabiconi applied a theatrical splash from a CC-branded watering can and they simultaneously burst into mechanical bloom,” (read more at style.com) WOW! Spring 2014 Couture Shows

The Couture shows, 17 in total for Spring 2014, were held in Paris from January 19, 2014 through January 23, 2014. It must be SO much fun to create a couture collection. The models seem to be real life White Barbie Dolls: peplums, drapings, sashes and bows anything goes. The lack of detail or otherwise the enlarged detailing: yards of rich fabric pulled through yet another yard of embellished cloth. Just like one has to do when making tiny Barbie Doll clothes. With that in mind; flashy in-your-face-materials are very important because of the fact that their exclusivity is not to be missed: lace, glass-fibre, brocade, fur, feathers are perfect to start with. The extreme opposite is the next step, as seen at Christian Dior and Viktor & Rolf. They made use of high-tech, ultra flat and paper thin, muted materials to create a very quiet, almost naked (not nude) look. The choice of colors: black, gold, white, pink and pastel, all traditional and catering to the taste of the average women (customer or not). For both colors and fabrics anything shimmering goes; just as long as it’s useful to make the Princess Dreamworld come to life.

At Sciaparelli the Vintage Barbie Doll feeling was enlarged because of the retro fifties outfits and because this show seemed like a fashion-history-lesson in a nutshell. (which also can be done with barbie dolls but that’s an other story). Mr Lagerfeld put emphasis on the waist-line at Chanel. He also created a roller skating barbie doll, including accessories: a little pouch and knee protectors trimmed with silver, cute! The designs of Viktor & Rolf and at Maison Martin Margiela tell a different story than the Princess one: We can imagine they always tried out markers and scissors on their dolls when they were young: Both couture houses hid the faces of the models and used Tattoo-inspired images.

What is Haute Couture?  Haute Couture: refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing. Haute couture is fashion that is constructed by hand, without the use of machines from start to finish, made from high quality, expensive, often unusual fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced and capable seamstresses, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques. A Haute Couture garment is often made for a client, tailored specifically for the wearer’s measurements and body stance.Considering the amount of time, money, and skill that is allotted to each completed piece, Haute Couture garments are also described as having no price tag – in other words, budget is not relevant. Each couture piece is not made to sell. Rather, they were designed and constructed for the runway, much like an art exhibition. In France, the term Haute Couture is protected by law and is defined by the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie de Paris based in Paris, France.
