Mimi Berlin Visited Aalsmeer

On a very Misty and Grey day, in typical Dutch weather, Club H.o.p. and Mimi Berlin decided to visit Aalsmeer. Situated in this small town, near Schiphol Amsterdam, is the largest trading centre for plants and flowers in the world. The flower auction is open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 07.00 to 11.00, and on Thursdays, from 07.00 to 09.00 (Royal Flora Holland). There are many colorful flowers to be seen, in bulk! But outside of the buildings there isn’t so much color to be found.

Nice to know: The Aalsmeer Flower Auction building is the second-largest building by footprint in the world, covering 518,000 square metres.

#59 Magazine; Black and white photography galore! Mimi Berlin visited the head quarters of #59 Magazine in Amsterdam the other day. Dutch photographer Mart Engelen is the father of #59 Magazine, a large glossy newspaper-like magazine filled with black and white photography. The love of Mart Engelen for (vintage) black and white photography reflects in #59 magazine; the magazine is beautifully printed and has no staples or (glue) binding. We won’t elaborate on that any further, It’s always best to go and see it for yourself; the magazine is for sale at selected stores worldwide (in Amsterdam at Pols Potten and the Van Gogh Museum in Paris at Colette and at Musee d’Orsay in Antwerp at Graanmarkt 13 in Milan at Corso Como 10) Mart Engelen is a photographer himself, his work is accompanied by interviews from his hand, he is interested in traveling, art and photography…. Furthermore, Engelen is a collector of, amongst others, Jean Dieuzaide, Edward Quinn, Andre Villers and Ernst Scheidegger. Salon at the Posthoorn Church: Twice a year SALON/ curates a fashion-meets-art-meets-design exhibition at various locations in Amsterdam. Mimi Berlin visited the Posthoorn Church location the other day. Dutch knitwear label “youasme” designed an installation for the Church Altar, it contains a movie of all sorts of explosions in black, accompanied by a retrospect of their garments in black. Fashion Designer Marleen Elenbaas also created a movie: “Optionals”, with parts of clothing and matching silhouettes of sewing patterns. We can try and describe these installations as good as we can but it’s always best you go an see for yourself, there is more on show through February 9, 2014. The Posthoorn church is newly renovated and that shows! It also has floor heating which is a nice bonus in Wintertime. This small church with it’s very high, neo-gothic, ceilings and lovely stained glass windows lies in the middle of a busy shopping street; de Haarlemmerstraat. The Posthoorn church is designed by architect Pierre Cuypers and was finished around 1861. (Mr Cuypers later also designed the Rijsmuseum and the Central Station in Amsterdam)

The other day we visited the headquarters of EH&I magazine. The editor in chief has a colorful and inspirational office. The office matches the aesthetics of the interior design magazine perfectly.
