Apocalyptic SF Action Heroes on the Runway for F/W 18

Apocalyptic SF Action Heroes on the Runway for F/W 18

Fashion-week: menswear for Fall/Winter 2018. It’s a mad, mad world. It truly is. Some Fashion designers can’t take it anymore, and it shows! Rick Owens showed some kind of mutant men. (the ones with the white faces) At Comme des Garçons some of the models  wore skeleton warrior-like headpieces (sewn in fabric). At Yamamoto’s Y-Project, the boys seemed protected by thigh-high-Ugg-boots: again it’s a mad and apocalyptic world!

Comic Book

In the runway shows, by the designers above, there was also a more lighter, and more colorful side to be found. Below, for example; Comme des Garçons, a jacket with an actual comic book print. At Vetements in a more illustrative way: the comic-book figure himself.

MBFWA Opening Night; Dutch Heritage.

MBFWA Opening Night; Dutch Heritage.

Now that’s a good idea! Opening Mercedez Benz Fashion Week Amsterdam with a “Dutch Heritage” program. We are especially interested in the last show of the opening evening named Couture & Crafts; an overview show with (vintage) fashion by Dutch couturiers and designers dating from 1960 to 2016. As you all know we adore vintage Dutch fashion heritage, we even based a couple of our Mimi Berlin’s Fashion-Fests on Dutch designers such as Fong Leng and Dick Holthaus using vintage outfits from the kabinet-vintage-depot collection. We hope tickets are still available!
The Making Of… The Campaign Visual for Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam January 2016; Together with partners Mercedes-Benz, Make-up Studio, Elite models, Team Peter Stigter, Jurlights, Tommy Hagen and Westergasfabriek, FashionWeek Nederland developed a new campaign visual with model Milou and the dress created by Jef Montes.” (video via fashionweek-nederland)

Schiaparelli and Kimora Lee Simmons

Schiaparelli and Kimora Lee Simmons.
We love it when our own so called “bad taste” becomes mainstream, or even better, a bit “highbrow”! The catwalk at Schiaparelli’s couture show for fall 2014 was covered in panther (or is it ocelot?) printed carpet! Just the same as the walk-in closet Kimora Lee Simmons had when she still lived with Mr. Simmons (not sure if she still has the same carpet nowadays or if she still carries the name Simmons) Anyways, we at Mimi Berlin don’t actually believe in bad taste, check out our opinion about that HERE in a presentation we made a while ago. Fashionweek in Amsterdam

The runway shows at the Mercedes-Benz Fashionweek Nederland are held at The Westergas terrein. Dutch fashion designers will show in two places at The Gashouder which is the main building, and at the smaller Transformatorhuis (January 23rd.> January 27)
Opening Night of Amsterdam’s FashionWeek
Mattijs kicked off at the main venue of the mercedes-benz catwalk. Picture this: On the stage a row of leafless trees. Opening in a very quiet way was a woman in a black evening dress singing Starry Night a-capella, she was pregnant. (This is Jolanda van den Berg, actress and the muse of Mattijs.) After she finished her song the models came on stage showing an autumn leaf color palette in plissee, prints (inspired by the painting techniques and the use of colors by Van Gogh) and knitwear. It seems like Mattijs toys around with the bounderies of couture and ready to wear. His choice of fabric is high-end, the shapes less so. He loves to mix, for example “evening wear” with a casual sweater. His autumn-winter 2014 is called Complementary.

MAISON the FAUX showed for the first time ever in the smaller Transformatorhuis venue. The show was opened by an opera singer (a member of maison the faux) she performed throughout the entire show getting more and more heated-up towards the end, we loved that! Maison the Faux created an orchestrated chaos on the catwalk and showed about twelve outfits, very extravagant ones, worn by young and older models, all in a pandemonium of pink, plush, ruffles, flowers and glitter. This show was clearly an introduction to the Maison the Faux Family, not so much to a collection of clothing. At the end the entire “family” (they are 6 in total including PR) came to clean up the stage creating an atmosphere in which the audience didn’t leave. Neither did we. We lingered on and went backstage to view the designs up-close: they are really more detailed and refined than one can comprehend during such a vibrant show!
Aziz Bekkaoi closed the first evening of the fashionweek in Amsterdam at the Gashouder. The Dutch newspapers were filled with reads on Aziz last week-end, probably because he showed for the first time in 10 years in Amsterdam. Aziz’s inspiration was clear and simple: the streets of the inner city in New-York with it’s  mixed religion and different cultures in the eighties of the previous century. That was clear from the opening of the show on; a large group of dancers dressed in black bomber jackets moving to “Fight the power” by Public Enemy. Continue reading

(Pre-) Fall 2014: All that Fur

(Pre-) Fall 2014: All that Fur. It seems like there is a fashion show held every single day of the year! The fashionable human species has killed the seasons as they were once intended. We, at Mimi Berlin are happy to go along with that, we will report on Fall, Pre-Fall, Spring, Summer, Couture, Winter and what have you not all at the same time. Or better even, we will report when we feel like it. Last week, from January 7, 2014 through January 18, 2014 the women’s wear collections for Pre-Fall 2014 were presented. Pre-Fall? Yes that’s a season as well. It’s the same as Mid-Season. We, at the Mimi Berlin offices always loved that term: “You can wear your Mid-Season coat today Beja, it’s getting chilly outside” It does sound better than “Pre-Fall coat”. Anyways, these collections are small in-between-capsule-collections and they are filled with fur, fur and more fur, of the glamorous kind.

The menswear Fall 2014 fashion shows were held from January 6, 2014 through January 19, 2014. Again the designers made lot’s of use of fur, fake or real, we don’t know, and in the end that doesn’t matter because it’s a trend, it will be picked up by high- and low-end brands. Fur for men in Fall 2014 was mostly used for Knee lenght coats, scarves and sweaters.
