M.E.N. presents: ES TUT MIR LEID – Ich habe mich verwählt

M.E.N. are Maartje Janse, Elysanne Schuurman and Nikki Duijst; three female fashion designers. With their shared artistic visions and values they decided to work in a collective: Studio M.E.N. They presented their debut fashion collection in juli 2017 during Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam. Their show was made possible by the Amsterdams Fundfor the Arts and Stichting Stokroos.

For their first collection M.E.N. placed traditional roles of men and women out of it’s original context which resuted in; well feminine-evening-sports-wear-gowns The clothes are made with van stock materials and in cooperation with Reblend, Meester Opleiding Coupeur, SLA, Textilelab Amsterdam, Makerversity en de ARC Amsterdam Lowlanders, the latter being a Dutch Rugbyteam.

Closing Show at Amsterdam Fashionweek by Maison The Faux

Closing Show at Amsterdam Fashionweek by Maison The Faux: FAUXmosapien

Maison The Faux are Tessa de Boer and Joris Suk, they are based in The Netherlands. (read more about MtF Here on this blog) Let us begin by describing the show venue at the Westergasfabriek. It was filled with 12, neatly lined up, Ergoline Prestige1600 tanning machines. If you didn’t know these were sunbeds you could easily imagine yourself being in the hibernation room of a spaceship traveling in time (think Aliën or A Space Odyssey for example) Anyways: it all looked great! Placed at the beginning of the catwalk, in front of the huge movie screen, was a centered ‘check-in desk’ with an entertaining performance by 3 hostesses. All this looked like something Mr. Lagerfeld could come up with for a Chanel Show…. Okay; enough about the inspiration/dreamed-up world Maison the Faux shared with us, the audience, after all this was a fashion show. The collection was divers within it’s design-format: it included extreme looks (so-called ‘experimental’) with a follow up on more wearable designs (so-called ‘commercial’) In our opinion covering both qualities in one collection is an intelligent and strong way of communicating with the audience. It helps you to understand (unconsciously or not) why you need that striped dress (and the photographed outfits below). Without kidding; communicating by means of fashion isn’t an easy thing to accomplish, but SO nice when it happens! Don’t worry if you missed this show; there will be a second chance to see it at New York Fashion Week in September.

Opening Show at Amsterdam Fashion Week: Das Leben am Haverkamp

Opening Show at Amsterdam Fashion Week: Das Leben am Haverkamp

Dutch fashion collective Das Leben Am Haverkamp opened the Amsterdam Fashion Week (sponsored by Mercedes-Benz: MBFWA) thursday evening. Das Leben am Haverkamp (The life at Haverkamp*)  debuted in 2015 at Amsterdam Fashionweek during “The Future Generation” program with the fashion performance “Gefelicifashion” (*Read more about that and the designers HERE on this blog)

(the finale XOXOMIMIBERLINMMXVII)

DLAH showed a “Holiday Resort Happening” The basis for this presentation was a question they asked themselves about fashion: what happens to clothes if you take away it’s functionality. The audience wasn’t really included in this questionnaire; we were left to think for ourselves whilst (a lovely cast) of models passed us by in a monotone choreography. The models were holding lifesize illustrations, mostly executed in plastic, of “looks”.

Lichting 2017 Fashion Design Award goes to Lizzy Stuyfzand

Lichting 2017 Fashion Design Award goes to Lizzy Stuyfzand

Yesterday (7/14/2017), on the second day of Amsterdam Fashionweek (MBFWA) Mini Berlin Blogger Team went to see the Lichting show (the annual contest for 14 graduating Dutch fashion design students) Lizzy Stuyfzand was the winner of the Lichting Award, for most promising talent, which is €10,000! Congratulations!! Ms Stuyfzand graduated last month at ArtEZ Arnhem with her menswear collection “Call me magpie” (see more about that here on this blog)

The second award, €3000; is ‘The Audience’s Favorite’ went to Sarah Bruylant of AMFI. The students participated to this lovely show were: Roos Boshart, Rachael Cheong, Annebel de Kok, Miro Hämäläinen, Karlijn Krijger and Ninamounah Langestraat (read more about them here lichting.nl) The winners truly deserved the prices they got, but we also rooted for Ninamounah Langestraat (Gerrit Rietveld Academy) her part of the Lichting show really stood out to us because of it’s very strong personality. Congratulations to all students; we wish you the best in your careers! xoxo Mimi

Jef Montes Tormenta Experience

Jef Montes Tormenta Experience

Since Jef Montes graduated in 2012 (at ArtEZ Arnhem) Mimi Berlin became interested in his work, so we have been following him. Montes presented an “Experience” at Amsterdam Fashion Week July 6th, 2016, which we unforntunately were unable to attend. That is really a shame because last season (read that here) we imagined Jef Montes doing just what he did: give a performance, experimenting on his fabrics and working on his creations, live with an audience.
We can’t write about his “Tormenta Experience” ’cause we weren’t there but we think it’s a very gutsy move!
Since this “experience” was also a preview on his next collection: Tormenta, we only can wait for that show. In the meantime we have to leave y’all with the images above, made by Team Peter Stigter, and a link to the site of Jef Montes.
