Amsterdam Fashion Week: Lichting 2018

Lichting 2018

Yes, it’s that time of the year agian: it’s fashionweek around the world and also in Amsterdam. Before we go on about the Lichting 2018 show, you must know that it is the first Amsterdam Fashion Week (AFW) without sponsoring by Mercedes-Benz, Dutch fashion entrepreneur Danie Bles is in charge now.

Museumplein in Amsterdam

Ms Bles changed fashion week in Amsterdam in a couple of ways. She introduced the “See Now, Buy Now’ formula, aimed at the consumer market. Programmed are catwalkshows by Hudson’s Bay, Penn&Ink N.Y., Silvian Heach, Goldbergh, 10DAYS, supermarket Lidl x Heidi Klum, Maison 365, Le Cafe Noir Studio & Jenneskens and Zoe Karssen. (We are not sure how many of these shops and/or brands are from The Netherlands) the location AFW has moved from the buildings at the Westergasfabriek complex to a tent on the Museumplein in Amsterdam, which is covered with grass.

Gerrit Rietveld Academie The Fashion Show 2017

Gerrit Rietveld Academie The Fashion Show 2017

It’s that season of the year again. Fashion design graduates get to showcase their work in the shape of a fashion show. Mimi Blogger Team split up to see Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveld Academie show both live, on the spot and via the livestream somewhere else.

Above our images, taken live at the show, which was held outdoors between the concrete pillars of a section of the A10 Amsterdam city ring highway overpass, near the WOW complex in the Bos en Lommer district. Backstage was also an interesting place: the models were covered in plastic bags, to be shielded from rain and nudity we guess. It was an added bonus for us; seeiing the designs amongst non-model-normally-dressed-people. (see more HERE)

ArtEZ Fashion Show 2017

ArtEZ Fashion Show 2017

Yesterday we, Mimi Blogger Team, went to see the annual show of ArtEZ Arnhem’s fashion design department, which was held at Musis Sacrum, one of Arnheim’s cultural centers. Musis Sacrum (just love that name) has restrooms larger than our headoffices, with very high ceilings covered in travertine (but that’s another story…) The first and second year students opened this fashionshow with experimental designs and after Collectie Arnhem 2017, designed by the 3rd year students, we got to see the graduation collections. This year a group of 19 Bachelor students will be graduating; congratulations to all!

As we took a peek backstage after the show, we noticed that the detailing of the designs are pretty high standard; fabrics (and leather) are often embellished and finished by hand, also the of craft knitting, printing and embroidery isn’t lost on these students. We love that!

ArtEZ Fashion Masters 2017 at the Atelier Neérlandais in Paris

ArtEZ Fashion Masters 2017 at the Atelier Neérlandais in Paris

On thursday March 2, the 18th generation of the fashion design master of ArtEZ University of the Arts Arnhem presented itself at Paris Fashion Week at the Atelier Néerlandais.  Graduates Klaudia Stavreva and Lotte van Dijk presented part of their final collections, These presentations can be seen at the Atelier Neérlandais, which will be open to the public, until Sunday, March 5.

The images above were made during the ‘Meet & Greet’ collection presentation. Yours truly, Mimi Berlin, was part of the expert-team, together with Mattia Akkermans, Hector Castro and Esther Oomen, who got invited to discuss, comment and review the collections made by second-year MA Fashion Design students Klaudia Stavreva and Lotte van Dijk. They will finalize and present this work in June 2017.

Lotte van Dijk created a slightly dingy nook in the luxurious Atelier Neérlandais. in which she showed her models one by one, her outfits gave a ‘Calamity Jane gone Glamazon’ vibe to us. Not only because Lotte used guns as props and styled her ourfits with western boots but also because of the ‘casualness’ the designs; oversized, slip-on, layered and raw edged. Lotte van Dijk generaly “based her collection on the way painters depict textiles” and in particular the “brushstrokes of Marlene Dumas”. Lotte painted directly on the clothes herself or translated her paintings in, for instance, embroidery and jaquards.

Klaudia Stavreva shared a personal, intimate story with us. To her, family and her (Eastern Europe) roots are important. That became clear in the performance-like presentation of her BOSSTVRVA collection. Accompanied by a video of Klaudia and her sister, dressed up as men and dancing around in a livingroom (that’s what they used to do when they were little) the Stavreva sisters dressed the models on stage. That way we could also see the make and the reverse side of the designs, like, for example: bandeau tops with shiny embellishments hidden on the inside. The Sworn Virgins of Albania were also clearly an inspiration source for Stavreva, hence the manly silhouettes and the, seemingly, oversized clothes.

As always we advice you to go see for yourself if you are interested. You can do that today and tomorrow (3 – 5 March 2017) from 9:30 – 18:00, at the Atelier Néerlandais (121, Rue de Lille, 75007 Paris)
